Come, Stay and Learn for a Truly Immersive English Language Experience

English and Cycling

Last year on July 3rd, a lovely summer’s day, we took the local Wensleydale train to Leyburn, walked out of the town on to a ‘quiet ‘ish’ country road, took out our picnic and waited…………………..

On the way we had seen yellow bicycles, yellow flags and yellow jerseys. We had also seen sheep coloured yellow, green and even spotted red – it was all quite a sight. Yes, we were waiting for the beginning of the Tour de France right here in Yorkshire. It is really hard to describe the excitement on that day – it was truly palpable. The air of anticipation was great, and the overriding feeling was one of happiness and elation.  The weather was really kind and everywhere was a pride, that approached fervour , that this event was taking place here in Yorkshire.

We sat, we waited, we anticipated and then it happened! Suddenly over the brow of the hill a great mass of cyclists came rushing towards us, a mass of colour, noise and raw energy and then it was gone, in a flash, literally. But what remained was the energy and excitement which went on for days and weeks afterwards.

As we looked at the coverage on the television one thing stood out, how utterly beautiful the Yorkshire Dales looked and this was echoed by participant after participant. They too were blown away by a landscape which they had never known about before and which rose up before them in all its glory. If you saw it you will agree I’m sure.

So here is a chance for you to ride that amazing terrain and experience for yourself some of the fantastic beauty of the Yorkshire National Parks , yes we are lucky to have two here, and by combining this with some first rate English language training, you can be sure that your stay with us will be doubly profitable!

Knowing cyclists I am sure that you will be itching to get out on a bicycle and up in to the hills but you will need to direct your enthusiasm into the first order of the day that will be your English lessons. I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed and we will deliver the English training parts of your stay with as much enthusiasm and pride as the cycling. We will however, go with the weather where necessary and be flexible about the day’s timetable.

We have a selection of bicycles and helmets here at Fleetham Lodge and my husband, David, is a keen cyclist so he will make sure that you have everything you need in terms of good equipment for the cycle tours we have chosen.

Our local area is very popular with cyclists and we have many enthusiasts among our friends here so we will be inviting them to join you on some of the rides. This will give you a fantastic opportunity to continue your English practice and ensure that your course is truly immersion.

Most of our students, whatever course they take, usually take at least one ride around the village. The roads are fairly quiet and there are a few short circuits that are perfect before breakfast, if you are an early riser or before dinner in the early evening. Ride down to the shop for a newspaper or ice-cream or take a short trip to see our 13th century church.

The area around Fleetham Lodge is ideal for cycling being open and relatively flat. We have bikes and helmets and some waterproofs but you may want to bring your own weatherproof clothing with you. Although we hope that you won’t need it!

Just remember that we ride on the left here!

Here are two routes we have chosen

Route 1

The first route begins on the Wensleydale railway.  Once there you will head off on a beautiful ride through the glorious Yorkshire Dales stopping for lunch on the way and then returning to the station for the journey home in the late afternoon.

Route 2

This route takes in the North York Moors around the village of Osmotherley where we will follow the heritage cycle route to Rievaulx Abbey.

Afternoon tea is something Quintessentially English & we’d love you to try some Real Yorkshire tea and cake!
