On cool crisp fall evenings there is nothing like a crackling bonfire to warm you up and to light up the night! November 5th is an evening in Great Britain where there are lots of bonfire celebrations to commemorate the night in the year 1605 that the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the House of Lords was averted and many lives were saved. It is traditional to light up a huge bonfire and to enjoy snacks and drinks with one another in your community. There is always lots of laughter and celebrating together, and it is so wonderful to be able to be outside in the chilly air but to be able to stay warm next to the roaring hot bonfire! Immersion. What does it mean? Why is it such a big deal when attempting to become fluent in a language other than your native tongue? One of my favorite dictionary definitions of immersion is the, “state of being deeply engaged or involved: absorbed.” Another definition is to be submerged, and I think that is also a beautiful way to describe it; to totally and completely dunk yourself into a language so that it entirely surrounds you. Then, when you come back up for air you will find yourself completely invigorated and that your language skills will be a whole lot richer. Continue reading
Black cats dart to and fro. Ghostly ghouls lurk just out of sight, hiding in the mists of the moors. Your path is lit by candles flickering in the gaping mouths of grinning jack o lanterns. You’re on your way to the most frightfully fun filled English Immersion experience of your life! Continue reading
Come to Fleetham Lodge and experience a continuing professional development class that will not only increase your passion for teaching but will also leave you inspired, refreshed, and restored!
Imagine yourself snuggled up in front of a crackling fireplace, cup of tea warming your palms (click here to experience some of this tea right now!), immersed in the beauty of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Later, you join in on a lively discussion of technology in the classroom with passionate fellow teachers over a delicious meal prepared with love just for you by your hosts. Late that evening, you snuggle underneath the covers in your cosy private guest room and listen to the rain falling softly outside as you drift into a peaceful and refreshing sleep. Continue reading

The air is getting crisp, the leaves are beginning to turn lovely shades of yellow and orange, and the days are growing shorter. That’s right, Autumn is here, and it is a beautiful time to visit North Yorkshire! This is an especially exciting time of year because there are so many fall festivals to attend which are of course the perfect place to meet people and practice speaking English! One of my favorite festivals has always been Oktoberfest, and this year Newcastle Upon Tyne is hosting their first annual Oktoberfest to bring the fun of this traditional Bavarian holiday into our community.
This celebration promises to be memorable with lots of traditional Bavarian beer and delicious Oktoberfest foods like bratwurst, schnitzel, and pretzel. There is going to be a German band playing great music and the website is encouraging attendees to wear dirndl and lederhosen which will certainly make for a very authentic and festive atmosphere! There are 2 different immersions; complete immersion and partial immersion.
Complete immersion, almost 100% of class time is spent in the foreign language. Subject matter taught in the foreign language is incorporated as necessary throughout the course. The goals are to become functionally proficient in the foreign language, and to master subject content taught in the foreign language. This type of program is usually sequential, cumulative, continuous, proficiency-oriented, and part of an integrated grade school sequence. Continue reading
