5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Immersion Experience
So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and embark upon the experience of a lifetime—congratulations! You will not regret it, especially if you decide to come and visit us at Fleetham Lodge.
Here are a few tips to help you make the most out of your immersion experience.
Fully Immerse Yourself
This may seem like a no-brainer, but when you are actually in a new country, surrounded by a new language, and you are walking down the avenue and all you see is sign after sign in English and then, behold! You glimpse a restaurant or a store sign written in your native language the temptation to duck in and indulge in your native tongue can be so strong, but resist! You will get much more out of your trip if you embrace the experience completely and resist the temptations to hide in the familiar. So, no picture menus, no menus in your native language, stay away from urban areas where you will find a community of people that speak your native tongue and try to limit time that you spend talking with or writing to folks back home, unless you write or speak to them in English.
Ditch the dictionaries, grammar books, and study guides—for this trip you won’t need them. These things are all great and I advise my students to use them, but for this trip you will be living the dictionary. So, get your nose out of those books and look around, breathe it in, taste it, let the language come alive for you!
Hang with the Natives
There is nothing that will help you learn a language like engaging in a lively conversation with a native speaker. Not only will you learn new vocabulary and hear a native speaker’s syntax and sentence structure and pronunciation, but you will be amazed at your own fluency when you slip into an easy conversation with a new friend. This will go so far in boosting your confidence in speaking the language, and you will be able to see just how much you really do know.
Stay in Someone’s Home
Staying in someone’s home will give you the maximum experience of staying in that country and the maximum opportunities to speak the language 24/7. You will also be in a relaxed, cosy environment that will make it easy for you to get the most out of your experience. I have to add, that when you come to stay with us at Fleetham Lodge, your every need will be seen to. We have delicious gourmet meals prepared by my husband and served around our big table with lots of conversation and laughter. We have cosy guest rooms which are way more comfortable than a generic hotel room, and you will have me. I am your personal English language teacher. I am dedicated to helping you learn English and I will coach you and encourage you and help you improve your English in the places that you need the most help in. An immersion experience doesn’t get much better than that.
Experience is an amazing teacher. We tend to remember things that we have experienced vividly and enjoyed. This immersion experience is not just an opportunity to improve your English, but it is also an opportunity to have fun and have an experience that you will never forget! Get out and enjoy a play, see some sites, engage in an activity that you would get to do nowhere else. These activities will not only be memorable and totally enjoyable, but your English fluency will take great bounding leaps forward as you do them. A big part of what we do with every immersion experience that we host for students is to find unique experiences for them that they will enjoy. We have done activities like hiking the moors, cycling, golfing, we go to cultural experiences like plays, pantomimes, spooky ghost tours, tours of castles, we read British books and learn about the authors and the time periods, tons of special Christmas activities, and loads more. There are so many things to do here, we will be able to find the perfect activity for you!
